ST. LOUIS – It’s been a brutally hot first week of back-to-school for so many students, teachers, and staff in the area.

This is impacting students from the football field to the classroom. Parkway North athletic events like tennis and soccer matches were cancelled this week, and practices were moved indoors.

Some metro east students returned to schools with little or no AC Granite City High School students are learning remotely for the rest of the week because of hot classrooms. The school is in the final stages of completing a summer HVAC project.

The old system is still in use right now, but the high temperatures have put a lot of strain on it.

The heat is also impacting classrooms in Belleville and Cahokia Heights. With classrooms close to the 80s, volleyball players at Cahokia Heights High School say they had a two-hour practice in a gym with no AC.

The heat is also playing a big role in the first week of high school football.

Teams across the area are postponing and rescheduling practices due to the extreme temperatures. Football practice at Northwest High School was pushed back several hours Tuesday evening, and warm-ups were moved inside.

“A lot of them, they are teenagers; they have that superman mentality; they can get through anything. It’s up to us administrators to make sure that they’re safe,” Northwest High School’s Athletic Director Kyle Wampler expressed.

There’s also a chance some games this Friday may need to be postponed due to the extreme heat expected. Parents and students are being asked to watch for information from school athletic directors and on social media.
